Love is Not a Feeling

"This is love: that we walk according to his commands. This is the command...that you walk in love." 2 John 6

First and second John talk a lot about love and God's commands to love. It reads a lot like this, "Love....love....love...God is love... love your brothers and sisters....love....love....God loved us first....love....love....love....God loved us, we must love others....love..." Obviously I'm paraphrasing, but you get the point. God is serious about loving others.

And not once, not one single time, does it mention anything about how we feel.

John doesn't spend any time talking to us about how we should muster up the feeling to love someone, only that if we love God we show that by loving others.

I think a lot of us get confused by the term love.

In our society, love is so often talked about as merely feelings. We actually think that just because we confess to love someone or something that that is truly love. But the Bible says differently.

I actually think the "love" we talk about in our society is love's flimsy cousin "like." We like someone...until we don't. Until they offend us or don't act the way we want. Until our expectations aren't met and then we don't "love" them anymore. But that's not love, friends.

Love loves even when it's not loved.

"Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, if God loved us in this way, we also must love one another." 1 John 4:10-11 (CSB)

Love loves even when it's not loved.

Even when it's not getting anything back in return.

Even when it's offended.

Even when it's not returned.

That's the kind of love that God is talking about. That's the kind of love that God commands us to love others with.

Because that's the kind of love that God loves you with.

He loved you first...before you loved him. And he loves you now perfectly...even though your love for him is imperfect.

And so when God commands us to love others, he means love imperfect people with my perfect love that you find only IN ME.

He is saying imitate my love towards others that I've shown to you. And so no, it's not the kind of love that comes from how you feel about someone, but about how God has shown in action how he feels about you. A love so great He died for you...while you were an unrepentant sinner...before you loved him.

So when you're out in the world trying to love others, just know...

That means you might have to love them first...

Love them even though...

Love them from a place of action.
